Check!?... Ker-ching!
I just found out that my bank charged me $40 for the checks they sent me recently. My precise words to them, when I called to find out what the unexpected $40 charge was, were "that's outrageous!"... but it didn't seem to have any impact.
On a good note, though, I got home tonight to find my Social Security Number card had arrived. That's some kind of speed record. I only applied on Friday, which means they processed my application and printed and mailed out my SSN card in 2 business days.
Respect! (well, more respect than I would normally bestow on a government department). They told us it would take up to 10 business days.
This means, though, that the stink I created over medical cover was only for 2 and a half weeks of coverage... rather than the 4-6 weeks that we originally believed it would take to get an SSN. Although, where medical cover is involved, that really isn't the point.
Now I've got my SSN, I'm in a position to get my driving licence... and much sooner than I was expecting, too. Better start reading my California Driver's Handbook.

We've come across about three... but they've all been where there would be a mini roundabout in the UK. I'm not sure they're brave enough yet to put one where you'd normally find eight lanes of traffic coming to an intersection.
Still, there's a section about it in the California Drivers' Handbook, so I'm going to have to be prepared to answer questions on it.
