Things could have been worse. Nobody was injured. Also, it's the hire car so it will be relatively easy to sort out, and the damage really seems quite minor - just some damage to the rear bumper ("fender" if I'm going to start getting my vocabulary right). Surprisingly little damage for the noise it made.
The CHP ('CHiPs', anyone?) were very good - they got there quickly, and they were helpful, friendly and efficient. Two of the cars were stuck blocking the middle lane of the 5-lane highway for about 10 minutes, though, so we may well have made it into the morning's traffic reports.
Apparently this is some kind of rite of passage. People at work seem to think that it's all part of becoming a local.

Fun, Fun, Fun... On The 101.
Well, I had my first brush with the law today.
I was supposed to man the company booth at Linux World today. I needed to get there by 9:30am, so I was on the road by 8:00am. For 20 minutes, everything was fine. Then, while I was sat stationary in heavy traffic on 101, there was a loud bang as I suddenly became the front car in a 4-car pile-up.
I called 911 (although they told me that someone else had already reported the accident), and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) arrived in about 10 minutes - which is impressive. Mine was the only drivable car, so they dealt with me first and sent me on my way.

CHIPS - now that dates us ... I used to like the blonde one, but I can't even remember his name now.

Like everyone else, the only name I remembered was Erik Estrada.
